Tentovision is an open, multi-brand VMS and an Axis Camera Station alternative that works with your existing Axis cameras over ONVIF and RTSP — with cloud, on-premise, and hybrid deployment, and without per-camera ACS licensing. Axis builds some of the best cameras in the industry, and Tentovision is designed to sit on top of that hardware rather than replace it: keep your M-, P-, Q-, and F-series cameras, keep Zipstream compression, and change only the management layer and its cost model.
Axis Camera Station is a capable, well-engineered VMS, and for an all-Axis, single-site deployment with budget for licensing and server infrastructure it remains a sound choice. The reasons enterprises evaluate an alternative are rarely about camera quality — they are about cost structure, brand lock-in, and deployment flexibility.
ACS is licensed per camera, and ACS Pro requires Windows Server infrastructure. For 100+ cameras across multiple sites, per-camera licenses, multi-year renewals, and the server hardware to host them become a significant capital and operating expense that finance teams scrutinise every cycle.
Axis Camera Station is optimised for Axis hardware and cannot manage non-Axis cameras. Enterprises increasingly mix brands — Axis at flagship sites, CP Plus at cost-sensitive ones, inherited Hikvision or Dahua from acquisitions — forcing a second VMS and a fragmented operation.
ACS Edge targets smaller per-site camera counts, ACS Center is built around Axis-only hardware, and the AXIS Camera Station Cloud Storage add-on defaults to 720p with 30-day retention per camera per year — you stack licenses for more. None matches a full multi-brand cloud VMS.
The Tentovision Cloud Adapter connects directly to your existing Axis cameras over the same network and records them to the cloud — no Axis Camera Station license, and no AXIS Camera Station Cloud Storage add-on with its 720p default. Because Axis co-founded ONVIF and ships best-in-class conformance, auto-discovery is the smoothest of any brand.
Nothing requires replacing an Axis recorder — Tentovision runs alongside it. And because retention and resolution are set per camera rather than purchased as stacked annual licenses, you avoid the position many ACS Cloud Storage users reach, where reaching 1080p or 60-day retention means buying and combining multiple per-camera licenses.

AXIS Companion is designed for small systems and does not scale to a multi-site enterprise estate; the Axis Camera Station mobile app still ties remote access to the ACS deployment and its licensing. Tentovision provides remote access independent of either.
For an enterprise running Axis at headquarters and other brands at branch sites, that unified, permissioned view is the point. Access is logged with a full audit trail of who viewed or exported which footage and when — the kind of accountability record security and compliance teams require, and which a small-system app like AXIS Companion was never built to provide.

This is an honest comparison. ACS is a strong product with genuine advantages — AXIS Object Analytics is a capable on-edge analytic, ACS integrates with Axis hardware more deeply than any third party can, and ACS Center provides solid multi-site management within an all-Axis estate. The table credits those strengths and positions Tentovision where it genuinely leads: cost, multi-brand support, and deployment flexibility.
| Feature | Axis Camera Station | Tentovision |
|---|---|---|
| Multi-brand camera support | ✗ Axis only | ✓ 100+ brands |
| Cloud recording | Limited (Edge/Center, 720p default) | ✓ Full cloud VMS, full resolution |
| On-premise recording | ✓ (requires Windows Server) | ✓ (lightweight edge device) |
| Hybrid (cloud + local) | Limited | ✓ |
| AI analytics | ✓ AXIS Object Analytics (Axis only) | ✓ 20+ analytics, any camera |
| Camera health monitoring | Basic | ✓ Comprehensive (camera, NVR, HDD, uptime) |
| Multi-site management | ✓ ACS Center (Axis only) | ✓ Unlimited sites, any brand |
| Deep Axis-native integration (Zipstream, ACAP) | ✓ Best-in-class | Zipstream at camera; partial ACAP |
| Mobile + web access | AXIS Companion + ACS mobile | ✓ Any browser + app |
| Infrastructure required | Windows Server + ACS licenses | Cloud Adapter or edge device |
| Pricing model | Per-camera license + server cost | Subscription or perpetual — no server |
The honest reading: stay with Axis Camera Station if you run an all-Axis environment, have budget for per-camera licenses and Windows Server infrastructure, and depend on deep ACAP integration or AXIS Object Analytics running natively on-edge — ACS is excellent at that, and there is no reason to move. Consider an Axis Camera Station alternative when your estate is multi-brand, when ACS licensing and server cost are under budget pressure, when you want a cloud-first or hybrid model without Windows Server, or when you need full-resolution cloud recording without the 720p default and license stacking. For most enterprises the deciding factor is some mix of cost and brand diversity rather than any shortcoming in Axis hardware.
Axis cameras have the best ONVIF conformance in the industry — Axis co-founded the standard — so connecting them to Tentovision is the smoothest setup of any brand. It takes about five minutes.
Use the free AXIS IP Utility (from axis.com), which auto-discovers every Axis camera on the network, or check the device list in Axis Camera Station.
ONVIF is enabled by default on most current Axis cameras. If not, open the camera web interface and go to Settings → System → ONVIF, then create a dedicated ONVIF user. Axis cameras support ONVIF Profile S and Profile T natively.
Axis uses the axis-media path on default port 554:
# Main stream
rtsp://username:password@IP/axis-media/media.amp
# Sub stream
rtsp://username:password@IP/axis-media/media.amp?videocodec=h264&resolution=640x480
# Alternative (ONVIF)
rtsp://username:password@IP/onvif-media/media.amp
The root password is set during first-time setup — Axis has no universal default password, which is a security strength.
Plug the Tentovision Cloud Adapter into the same network switch as your Axis cameras. Power it on — a single blue LED indicates network connectivity.
Scan the QR code on the adapter with the Tentovision app to register it to your account. Axis cameras auto-discover over ONVIF immediately — typically the fastest of any brand.
Confirm each live feed in the dashboard, then set recording mode (continuous, motion, or hybrid) and cloud retention per camera. Axis Zipstream compression is preserved during cloud recording — no transcoding.
M-series (M3xxx dome, M4xxx varifocal, M5xxx PTZ), P-series (P1xxx box, P3xxx dome, P5xxx PTZ), Q-series (Q1xxx box, Q3xxx dome, Q6xxx PTZ), F-series modular, and all ARTPEC-7 / ARTPEC-8 cameras. 50+ Axis models tested and supported.
AXIS S-series NVRs, including the S3008, S2108, and S2208. Axis cameras support dual streaming natively — main stream local, sub-stream to cloud.
/axis-media/media.amp rather than /onvif-media/media.amp; the former is the native Axis path.Tentovision runs your existing Axis estate three ways, which matters for enterprise buyers whose data-residency or operational constraints rule out cloud-only platforms.
No Windows Server and no ACS infrastructure to license or maintain — this eliminates the server cost ACS Pro requires. The Cloud Adapter pulls your Axis camera streams straight to Microsoft Azure with nothing on site to maintain beyond the adapter.
A lightweight edge device with local storage, running without internet, in place of ACS's Windows Server requirement. Video never leaves the building, and the edge device handles management and analytics on premises.
Local recording for instant playback plus cloud backup for offsite resilience. Keep Axis ACAP edge analytics running locally while Tentovision adds cloud redundancy and cross-brand management.
Mix modes across the estate and manage them together with full multi-site CCTV monitoring.
AXIS Object Analytics is built into newer Axis cameras and runs on-edge; it is a genuinely good analytic for object detection, and Tentovision is designed to complement it rather than replace it. Where Tentovision adds value is the cloud-processed, cross-brand intelligence and operational workflows that on-edge detection alone does not cover. The same analytics apply across your non-Axis cameras too, on the same dashboard.
